Black Swallowtail Butterfly

Once again I have been graced by the visit of another beautiful swallowtail butterfly. As I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago, we haven’t had many butterflies this year, but the few that we have had have been large swallowtails.

This black swallowtail was feeding on the catnip and Korean licorice mint plants in the front courtyard.

It continues to be very hot and dry here. I am spending my mornings watering everything just to keep them alive. There is a chance of rain tomorrow, but I am not getting my hopes up. I don’t want to get too depressed if we are passed by again.

Peace,
Carol

  1. You know, now that you’ve mentioned it, I haven’t seen many butterflies either this summer, and I have a garden filled with lantana, verbena, and other butterfly plants. Strange.

  2. There was a segment on a local show recently where they were visiting the butterfly gardens at the LBJ Wildflower Center, and they were saying that there haven’t been many butterflies here this year. I think they said that it wasn’t unusual to have fluctuations from year to year in the butterfly population here. I don’t recall what the factors related to the fluctuation were though.

I have seen alot more honey bees this year. That has to be a good sign.

    Take care.

  3. Amazing pictures of the black swallowtail butterfly, congratulation. I remember the time back in Germany where we also had a huge variety of butterflies.
