Front Yard Project: Part 5 – Planting Has Begun!

Planting has started!! I wanted to get some of the main architectural plants installed first so I could begin to visualize other aspects of the planting bed designs. I have a high level plan that we are working from, along with a plant list, but there are many detailed elements that are yet to be decided upon.

In the north courtyard bed we have installed a hedge of Knock Out roses along the north and east edges of the bed, a Goldenball Lead tree to the south of the roses in the west area of the bed, and a couple of clumps of Moudry Fountain Grass and a Texas Sotol in the same area. I had wanted to alternate red and pink roses for the hedge, but we couldn’t find any pink Knock Out roses locally, so I opted to use all double red roses for the hedge and chose a beautiful pink New Dawn climbing rose for each side of the arbor at the east end of the courtyard. This is a vigorous climber, a repeat bloomer, and is exactly the light pink color I wanted.

In the south courtyard bed I put a Texas Sotol in the east area, a collection of grasses; Hamelin Fountain Grass, Gulf Coast Muhly, Dwarf White Fountain Grass, and Little Bunny Fountain Grass, along with two Red Yuccas in the center area, and a Texas Redbud tree at the west end of the bed.

I placed a collection of grasses, a couple of Red Yuccas, and a purple Trailing Lantana in the north end of the west bed.

Finally, snapdragons, violas, and pansies are being massed in the front bed skirting the front porch.

Much more to come. Stay tuned.
