I Love Fall Gardening

I think that fall is the best season for vegetable gardening here in Central Texas. Perhaps it is because I really like greens and cole crops, but I usually get pretty good production from warm weather crops in the fall as well. Even though it doesn’t feel a whole lot like fall here yet, I decided it was time to go ahead and get my fall garden planted.

I planted several varieties of squash and peppers a couple of weeks ago, and they are now blooming. No fruit is setting yet.

A couple of days ago I started planting my greens and broccoli. I chose broadstem chard and packman broccoli since I have had such good luck with those varieties in the past. I also included several types of organic lettuce.

I have another wagon load ready to plant this evening when it gets cooler.

I love these dwarf zinnias. They have volunteered in several areas of my back yard, and they have bloomed steadily all summer. They are a favorite of the butterflies in the fall.

I haven’t had much time to blog lately. My job has been keeping me very busy, and I spend the rest of my time trying to keep control of my garden. I’m sure as fall wears on I will find more time for blogging.

Take care.

Discussion

  1. I just started some summer squash and bush beans a couple of weeks ago and hoped it wasn’t going to be to late. I’ve never grown either in my fall garden before but it looks like it might be a hotter than average fall here in Central Texas. My squash isn’t blooming yet but yours look encouraging so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

And you’ve reminded me that I need to get on with the broccoli and chard. Happy fall gardening…it’s our best season, isn’t it?

  2. Yes. Fall is the the best. I just cover the tender plants when the temperatures get below 40, and with luck I will have tomatoes and peppers well into December.

I’m trying butternut, golden zucchini, and spaghetti squash this fall. We’ll see how it goes.

    Enjoy!!

  3. I love your dwarf zinnias. It’s nice to find flowers that do well here and attract the butterflies. Good luck with your veggies and your full-time job. 🙂

  4. Hi Dawn.

I am definitely sold on these dwarf zinnias for our area. I’ve had much better luck keeping them looking nice for long periods of time than I have had with the non-dwarf type.

I’ll keep you posted on the progress with the veggie garden. I’ll keep pulling stuff out and adding new stuff until December, so many changes will be occurring.

Good thing about my job is that I work exclusively from home, so I can maximize the time I spend on gardening and landscaping.

  6. mss – very cool! Mine have been flowering for several weeks, but still no fruit setting yet. I fertilized last weekend in hopes of stimulating some fruit production. Keep me posted on how your plants are doing.

  7. This post is making me regret not planting some sort of fall crop – the tomatoes and peppers were such flops that I lost momentum. Your garden looks good, and like Dawn, I’m intrigued by the small zinnias.

  8. Hey Annie, I find vegetable gardening in Central Texas a challenge at any time of the year, but I have had my best luck in the fall. Peppers definitely do best in the fall as long as the days remain warm.

I assure you there are parts of my garden that I am not featuring in photos that look pretty crappy at the moment :-). But, that is what weekends are for!

    Take care. Carol
