Front Yard Project: Part 3

The cold weather has finally arrived, just in time for Thanksgiving. We went from a record high 89 degrees to 50 degrees in about two hours on Wednesday afternoon. The rain is forecast to commence late this afternoon, and then to continue all weekend, and the temperatures are going to stay in the 40s. Brrrr.

The work on the front yard project is moving along nicely. We, I should really say Ron, have all the rock placed for the four main planting beds; the front bed (surrounding the front porch), the north bed and south bed, and the bed on the west side of the courtyard that runs along the front of the house. The next job is to fill all these beds with the Geo Growers soil that was delivered late Wednesday, which will commence today.

I’m spending alot of time looking through Texas Gardener magazines, native landscaping books, and water gardening books gathering ideas for plants, bed planting designs, and water features. There are so many possibilities!

Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend.

Stay safe and warm.

Wonderful! What will go in the middle, with the vertical stones?

mss – I love rocks almost as much as I love plants. Raised beds are a must here since we have very little soil, and what little soil we have is very alkaline. We are fortunate to have lots of very large rocks/boulders on our property, some of which I want to move into the front courtyard gardens to add more structure and interest.

Pam – we haven’t decided on the type of water feature that will be in the center. At the moment, I am leaning toward a natural pond with a small waterfall. The area is really quite large, even though it is hard to tell from the photos.
